We'all's Got the Biggest Punkins

I'm not even going to try to explain the above title, but I'll bet you at least figured out that this post is about pumpkins!  If you're really with it, you probably even guessed it's about big pumpkins.

Did you read last year's post titled Gardening Basics?  If you did, you know that our two-box garden last year was a smashing success.  As a reminder, here are a few pics.

This year as a side project for the kids, we've decided to try to grow a giant pumpkin!  We became interested in these a couple years ago when we went to the Tualatin Pumpkin Regatta.  (See the very end of that post for pics.)  We also have a book called The Biggest Pumpkin Ever, starring a mouse named Desmond.

Just this afternoon I started our seeds indoors.  (If this is a late start, don't tell me; I don't want to know.)  We're using Dill's Atlantic Giant seeds from Ed Hume, which I think we got at either Fred Meyer or our local garden store.  Either way, they were easy to come by.

So here's my challenge to you: Would you like to join our only-for-fun, winner-gets-nothing-but-bragging-rights growing competition?  If you do, let me know!  I may have some starts to spare, and as of today I have about 6 extra seeds I could share.  I thought it could be fun to get a group of people growing these things independently, and we could share our progress throughout the season.

In any case, I will at least keep you updated on our progress!
